INTRODUCTION

The Sericultural Research Institute, Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (SRICAAS) was founded in Zhenjiang City in 1951 by the integration of former Zhenjiang Sericultural Experimental Station, Zhejiang Sericultural Experimental Station, Wuxi Sericultural Experimental Station, East China Fabric Research Institute and former Department of Sericulture of Nanjing Central Agricultural Experimental Institute. In the first years it was called East China Sericultural Research Institute and was given the present name in 1957. It was authorized a second name of Jiangsu Provincial Sericultural Research Institute in 1995.

Taking mulberry, silkworm, cocoon and silk as its major research subjects, SRICAAS contributes itself to basic, applied and developmental researches of sericulture. It is focused on studying key technology for quality, high-yield and efficient sericultural production, organizing national and regional cooperative study to solve significant scientific problems in sericultural production, conducting academic exchanges at home and abroad, training graduates for master and doctoral degree, editing and publishing sericultural periodicals and theoretical monographs.

Aiming at the cutting edge of sericultural sciences and developmental strategies of sericulture, natural resources and environment and facing to the whole country and the world, SRICAAS is making effort to convert itself to an international sericultural research center.
