The Sericultural Research Institute, Chinese Academy of
Agricultural Sciences (SRICAAS) was founded in Zhenjiang City in 1951 by the integration of former Zhenjiang Sericultural Experimental Station, Zhejiang Sericultural Experimental Station, Wuxi Sericultural Experimental Station, East China Fabric Research Institute and former Department of Sericulture of Nanjing Central Agricultural Experimental Institute. In the first years it was called East China Sericultural Research Institute and was given the present name in 1957. It was authorized a second name of Jiangsu Provincial Sericultural Research Institute in 1995.
Taking mulberry, silkworm, cocoon and silk as its major research
subjects, SRICAAS contributes itself to basic, applied and developmental researches of sericulture. It is focused on studying key technology for quality, high-yield and efficient sericultural production, organizing national and regional cooperative study to solve significant scientific problems in sericultural production, conducting
academic exchanges at home and abroad, training graduates for master and doctoral degree, editing and publishing sericultural periodicals and theoretical monographs.
Aiming at the cutting edge of sericultural sciences and developmental
strategies of sericulture, natural resources and environment and facing
to the whole country and the world, SRICAAS is making effort to convert
itself to an international sericultural research center.
DIVISION & LABORATORIES
Development Division: In charge of management for research and
development, international collaboration, sericultural information and
administrational coordination. There are 2 high level and 4 mid-level
Financial Affairs Setion: responsible for management of
Department of Moriculture: The research work is focused on collection,
evaluation, reservation and utilization of mulberry germplasm, breeding
for good-quality mulberry varieties, high-yield and high-efficiency
mulberry cultivation technology, pest and disease control, mulberry
biotechnology and utilization of mulberry functional substances. There
are one doctoral advisor, 5 professors and associate professors, 3
Department of Silkworm Breeding and Rearing: The research
is focused on collection, evaluation, reservation and utilization of
silkworm germplasm, breeding for silkworm strains of high-quality and
for special use, identification of silkworm strains, silkworm genomics,
development of new technology of breeding, high-quality and
high-efficiency silkworm rearing technology and instruments. There are
one doctoral advisor, 11 professors and associate professors, 9
Department of Silkworm Physiology and Pathology: The main
research subjects include silkworm pathology, development of techniques
and chemicals and disinfectants for silkworm disease control, silkworm
physiology, non-fabric utilization of silkworm. There are 2 doctoral
advisors, 9 professors and associate professors and 5 assistant
Sericultural Information Center: Editing and publishing
sericultural periodicals, Sciences of Sericulture and China Sericulture.
There are 4 senior editors.
Key Laboratory of Silkworm Biotechnology, Ministry of Agriculture:
Founded in 1996, the laboratory is focused on biotechnology of
silkworm and mulberry, molecular biology of silkworm viruses and
silkworm bioreactor. There are 2 doctoral advisors, 4 professors and
associate professors, 1 assistant professors, 4 visiting scholars, 6
doctoral fellow and graduate students.
Quality Inspection Center for Sericultural Products, Ministry of
Agriculture: Established in 2001, it was the first of its kind
in China. The research work is focused on quality test of sericultural
products, development of technology and standard for quality test. There
are one doctoral advisor, 5 professors and associate professors, 2

resources of mulberry and silkworm.
Genetics and breeding of mulberry and silkworm: genetics
of mulberry, breeding of mulberry varieties for different ecological
environment and for different utilization; genetics of silkworm,
breeding of silkworm strains for spring rearing, summer-autumn rearing
and of different filament size, breeding for disease-resistant silkworm
Pest and disease control of mulberry and silkworm: causes
for occurrence of pests and diseases of silkworm and mulberry, their
epidemiology, control methods and technology.
Practical technology of sericultural production:
high-yield and good-quality mulberry cultivation technology,
high-quality and high-efficiency silkworm rearing technology.
Comprehensive utilization of active materials of mulberry and
silkworm: Utilization of mulberry leaves and mulberry fruits,
functional utilization of silk powder and silkworm powder.
Biotechnology and silkworm bioreactor: mulberry tissue
culture and transgenic mulberry, functional genomics of silkworm,
transgenic silkworm, expression of foreign genes with baculovirus vector
expression system, molecular mark assisted breeding of mulberry and

PROJECTS & ACHIEVEMENTS
The institute has currently
a number of national key research projects, including the National
High-Tech R&D programme (863 programme), National Key Technologies R&D
programme, NSFC projects. Some researches are also supported by local
government, such as Jiangsu Province.
The institute has published a total of more than 3000 papers and 50
monographs and symposia. It has won more than 90 prizes of various kinds
and grades, including 16 national prizes such as National Prize for
Invention, National Prize for Science and Technology Progress.
SCIENTIFIC DEVELOPMENT &
The institute has developed
more than 50 new products, such as mulberry varieties, silkworm
varieties, chemicals and disinfectants for silkworm disease-control,
pesticides for mulberry and instruments for silkworm rearing. Of them,
six were entrusted with invention patent and practical patent.
The institute has established exchange and collaboration programmes of
various forms with sericultural institutions of more than 30 countries,
such as Japan, India, Brazil, Korea, Thailand, Pakistan, Kirghizia,
Kenya and more than 10 international organizations such as FAO, ISC,
ISA. It has held 20 batches of international training classes for
sericulture. One professor has worked with FAO as a sericulture
consultant and some others were sent to foreign countries for

112 staff members in the institute. Among them, 14 are professors and 29
are associate professors. 39 percent of them hold doctoral or master
degree. They distributed in 18 research groups subjected to six
laboratories and centers.
The institute is qualified to enroll doctor degree and master degree
students in the field of sericulture sciences. So far, 14 doctoral
graduates and 56 master graduates have graduated from the institute.
